These incredibly delicious vegan chocolate covered strawberries are sure to please and impress!
The vibrant flavors of ripe strawberries enrobed in rich chocolate combine for a decadent dessert that is healthy and guilt-free!
They are surprisingly quick and easy to make, yet they are so elegant and beautiful. Vegan chocolate covered strawberries are perfect for gifting, hosting, or sharing with loved ones (or just yourself)!
Don’t worry – you can easily find vegan chocolate at most grocery stores these days. No need to make a special trip to a health food store!
Tips for success
Chocolate won’t stick to wet berries, so you may want to wash your strawberries the night before or early in the morning you will be making these.
If it’s too late for that, paper towels tend to dry strawberries more thoroughly than cloth towels.
Also, try to avoid using strawberries with bruises, as the chocolate won’t stick as well in those spots.
If you automatically removed the stems, don’t worry. You can just use a toothpick to skewer each strawberry for easy swirling.
The ingredients
Technically, you only need two ingredients for this recipe, although I used three. That means each one has to count!
Strawberries – The riper the strawberries, the better these will taste! Look for red near the stem. If they are white near the stem, they will not be as sweet (although definitely still worth eating).
Larger strawberries are easier to swirl in the melted chocolate, although smaller berries will have a higher ratio of chocolate to fruit. Plan accordingly. I personally preferred the tartness in the larger berries, but of course they are all delicious.
I bought organic strawberries, as the little seeds tend to hang on to pesticides. Regardless, you will want to wash them and let them thoroughly dry before you begin.
Vegan chocolate – Dark and semisweet vegan chocolate melts just fine for dipping, similar to dairy chocolate, due to the cocoa butter.
Coconut oil – This is optional, especially if you are making this for yourself. However, vegan chocolate, even more so than dairy chocolate, has a tendency to look powdery and white once it cools.
The coconut oil will help your candy look shiny, dark, and appetizing. If you are making these as a gift, I would add it for best results.

Where can you find vegan chocolate?
Most grocery stores now sell dark chocolate chips, much of which is vegan.
For example, Ghiradelli makes a dark chocolate chip that doesn’t have any dairy. They do have an allergy warning though, as it is produced at the same plant where they make dairy chocolate.
I bought the Enjoy Life brand chocolate chips, which claim to be free of the top 14 allergens.
Lily’s and Hu Kitchen brands of vegan chocolate were also available at the stores I checked.
However, I did have a harder time finding vegan white chocolate. At my second grocery store, I found one bar that had almond pieces in it.
To be honest, I was hoping it would be like dairy white chocolate so I could have a white chocolate drizzle over my strawberries. It did not work very well for that purpose, but it still made a nice glaze over the first coat of vegan chocolate.
If anyone knows of a brand of vegan white chocolate that works well for drizzling, please let me know in the comments!
Variations on this recipe for vegan chocolate covered strawberries
Try adding a teaspoon or so of almond butter or peanut butter for a slightly thicker coating.
I used a nonstick saucepan for melting the semisweet chocolate. However, you can just use a microwave safe bowl and microwave the chocolate in 20 second bursts, stirring in between, until it is ready.
Alternatively, you can use a double boiler method, where you place the chocolate in a metal bowl inside a pot of hot water until melted.
Optional Toppings
Feel free to decorate these to your heart’s content! Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Shredded coconut
- Crushed nuts
- Cocoa nibs
- Drizzles of more and/or different colored chocolate
- Mini vegan chocolate chips
- Crushed graham crackers or pretzels
- Crushed candy canes
- Vegan sprinkles
- Sea salt
Serving and Storage
These are best the day you make them. Once your vegan chocolate covered strawberries have set, take them back out of the fridge and serve at room temperature the day you make them. Only put the leftovers in the fridge.
They will last several days in the fridge, but the chocolate will start sweating, so they may not look quite as nice.
If you are worried about the chocolate sweating, you can let these cool at room temperature rather than in the fridge. They will just take longer to cool.
Can you freeze vegan chocolate covered strawberries?
No, it is not a great idea because as the strawberries thaw, the liquid released will damage the chocolate shell.
(If you’ve already frozen some, just eat them while they are still frozen like an ice cream treat, before they get soggy.)
For the same reason, frozen strawberries will not work very well in this recipe.
Are sprinkles vegan?
Many sprinkles are not vegan as they contain confectioner’s glaze, which is derived from insects.
PETA’s website lists a number of vegan sprinkles available to purchase, including:
- 365 Everyday Value Chocolate Sprinkles
- Watkins Rainbow Decorating Sugar
- Wilton Edible Glitter, Gold Stars
- Wilton Sparkle Gels
You can see the full list here.
Why are these vegan chocolate covered strawberries healthy and guilt-free?
Most vegan chocolate is relatively dark chocolate. Both dark chocolate and strawberries are quite high in antioxidants.
In addition to providing antioxidants, dark chocolate provides some fiber and minerals, including iron, copper, manganese, magnesium.
It may also protect against the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which can help maintain a healthy heart.
Here’s the full scoop on how dark chocolate can support health.
Strawberries are packed with vitamin C, fiber, and manganese, and also contain a decent amount of vitamin B9 (folate) and potassium.
These little heart shaped berries can also help protect your heart by improving good cholesterol and blood pressure.

Vegan Chocolate Covered Strawberries Ingredients
Before you begin, you will need:
EDIBLE INGREDIENTS
- 1 lb of strawberries
- 1 cup of vegan chocolate chips
- 1 tsp of coconut oil
- Optional toppings: shredded coconut and a bar of vegan white chocolate with almonds
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
- Saucepan or microwave safe bowl
- Spatula
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
How to Make Vegan Chocolate Covered Strawberries
- First, wash and thoroughly dry your strawberries. Leave the stems and leaves on as a handle.
- Then, set up a baking sheet (or a large plate or two) and cover your surface with parchment paper. If you have anything you want to stick to the wet chocolate, like coconut flakes or chopped nuts, get them out and ready on small plates.
- When the berries are dry, add the vegan chocolate chips and coconut oil to a nonstick saucepan over medium heat (or use a microwave safe bowl or a double boiler).
- Watch the chocolate closely – it won’t be long before the chocolate turns shiny, which is when you can stir in the coconut oil and thoroughly combine everything. Be careful not to let the chocolate burn.
- Remove the chocolate from heat, then dip and swirl each strawberry in the melted chocolate. Set each one aside on the parchment paper lined baking sheet.
- Once all the strawberries are covered in vegan chocolate and lined up on the baking sheet, sprinkle on any toppings you want to stick to the wet chocolate, then place the tray in the refrigerator to cool for 15 minutes.
- They are technically done! Serve right away, or, if you want to add any chocolate drizzle (or a second layer of vegan white chocolate), you can begin round two.
- If your chocolate has firmed up, simply reheat it briefly until it is easy to work with again, and drizzle chocolate stripes back and forth over your strawberries with a small spatula or spoon. Once they are picture perfect, pop them back in the fridge for another 15 minutes, then serve and enjoy!
